New platform pillar rebuilds the Township’s relationships with Langley City, Fraser Health, TransLink, senior governments, the school board and First Nations neighbours
LANGLEY TOWNSHIP — Langley Strong today released Respect for Our Neighbours, a pillar built on a plain observation: grant money, transit service and infrastructure dollars flow to the councils that show up and do the work — and burned bridges cost taxpayers money.
The pillar commits the team to rebuild working relationships with the City of Langley and Fraser Health, starting with shared services that save money on both sides; to build a regional alliance pressing the Province and TransLink on roads and transit; to meet the Langley School Board at least annually with a standing working group of three councillors and three trustees; to work with the Kwantlen, Katzie, Semiahmoo and Matsqui First Nations; and to return the Township to the community tables where decisions about services in Langley are made.
“Grant money flows to the councils that show up and do the work, not the ones that pick fights,” said council candidate Blair Whitmarsh. “A regional alliance pressing for the same roads and the same transit is how a fast-growing community gets its share.”
“I’ve worked inside our health system, and I can tell you a Township that talks to Fraser Health gets more for its residents — services, clinics, seniors’ care,” said council candidate Teresa Townsley. “That relationship gets rebuilt on day one.”
“Our kids play on the same teams as kids from Langley City and Surrey – our governments should be able to play on the same team too,” said mayoral candidate Jay Lundgren. “Bridges, not battles. It’s cheaper, it brings more to Langley, and it works.”
Respect for Our Neighbours is one of ten pillars Langley Strong is releasing ahead of the October 17 municipal election. The full pillar is at LangleyStrong.ca/Platform.
