New platform pillar binds the team to govern in the open — consultation before decisions, residents guaranteed their turn, and public money never used to threaten the people it serves
LANGLEY TOWNSHIP — Langley Strong today released Respect for Each Other, a set of rules the team will bind itself to about how Township Hall treats the people who pay for it.
The commitments: consult the public before major decisions, with feedback visibly reflected at the Council table; guarantee residents who take time off work to speak get their turn; never use public money to threaten residents or colleagues; post every major decision and its cost in plain language; hold closed meetings only when the law requires, report out when the reason expires, and publish quarterly legal-spending totals; schedule meetings when working residents can attend; rebuild advisory committees; and restore a respectful working relationship with Township staff.
“You’ll be consulted before big decisions, not after — and if you take time off work to speak at Council, you’ll get your turn,” said council candidate Margaret Kunst. “You should never need a lawyer to ask your Township a question.”
“Every major decision posted in plain language, with what it costs. Public money never used to threaten the people we serve,” said council candidate Shumail Javed. “That’s respect. It’s that simple.”
“You teach respect by showing it — at the Council table, with staff, and with the residents who disagree with you,” said council candidate Blair Whitmarsh. “That’s how this team will run a Township.”
“This is the whole campaign in one pillar,” said mayoral candidate Jay Lundgren. “Disagree without being disagreeable. Govern in the open. Treat every voice like it counts — because it does.”
Respect for Each Other is one of ten pillars Langley Strong is releasing ahead of the October 17 municipal election. The full pillar is at LangleyStrong.ca/Platform.
